Pu Harakeke: Ōtautahi Maori artists explore the relationship between whanau and Matariki
   Wednesday, 2nd June – Saturday 10 July

Matariki is a time for whanau to come together, share food, song and whakapapa. This mixed media exhibition
continues the journey of artists from Kohinga Toi, who share their experiences of Matariki in relation to whanau.
Raranga (weaving), paintings and carving convey the nuances of whanau and Matariki – of new beginnings, and
of holding fast to the past; of connection to each other, whether through extended whanau, or as a whanau of
artists learning together and supporting one another.

Artists: Alice Spittle, Priscilla Cowie, Tairoa Flanagan, Asher Newbery, Ranui Ngarimu, Te Rangimaria Ngarimu,
Kapuakore Ngarimu, Glendale Rangihaeata, Paula Rigby, , Brae Toia.

Saturday, 5th June - Wednesday, 30th June

Seven Maori artists explore the theme of Mahinga Kai and the importance of kai at the time of
Matariki (Maori New Year). Traditionally Matariki is the time when the Pataka (storehouse) was full.

Banks Peninsula is an important Mahinga Kai site and the srtists have drawn from their knowledge of traditional
food gathering to create this exhibition.

Waitangi Exhibition, Feb 2010

In commemoration of 170 years since the signing of Te Tiriti of Waitangi, Manaaki Solutions invited me to show some work in Waitangi.  The theme for the art exhibition was cultural identity, appreciation and diversity.

I felt very privileged to have my work showing at such a momentous occasion.

» Te Tihi, Rotorua, January 2010

In January I was lucky to be invited to Te Tihi in Rotorua, the 4th gathering of Indigenous visual artists.

100 artists were invited from all over NZ, Alaska, Sweden, Hawaii, North America and more.

I feel like I am only just coming back down to earth after a very intense and inspiring trip.  There were lots of collaborative works going on between carvers, painting, print makers, potters, glass work artists and many more!

Although we were all from different cultures our art had many common threads and we all enjoyed being inspiring and being inspired....oh, and enjoy the great kai!

Thanks so much to Sandy, June and all the organisers behind the scenes that work their buts off to make it a great event.

I met some incredible people and have made some lifelong friends.
